project Narrative
It takes everyone to create community. This design focuses on nature and people working in harmony, cultures and events woven together in a patchwork quilt of the present day. We were inspired by the City of Roses itself, the history and service of the Portland Fire Department, and the area’s tribal artists. References to Portland within the mural include the Chinook Salmon, Northern Spotted Owl, Swallowtail Butterfly, Oregon White Oak, Douglas Fir, and Portland Rose. The tree trunk design and quilt patterns are inspired by Northwest Coast art styles and morning star quilts and meant to honor local tribal members and their commitment to preserving the environment. References to the fire department Include the turnout coat sleeve, the arson dog (based on retired Lila), the stylized golden design from the department’s historic steam engine, the Fire and Rescue logo, and the 36 butterflies, which symbolize lives lost in service. The circular shapes throughout symbolize the ripple effect, the paper crane and dove symbolize peace, and the color scheme weas made to reflect sunset. Both Antwoine and I would use the word “joy” to characterize all our work, and we hope this comes through the entire composition
